Checking out the Dairy
Davy and I talked recently about where milk came from. He was excited to learn that milk actually comes from a cow! So we decided to take a trip to the dairy where our raw milk came from, just to see the facility. It worked out perfectly that we were already out of milk from our co-op delivery, so I picked up a couple more gallons. After a leisurely drive to Bridgeport (it took about an hour from our house), we drove down a nice country road, over a cattle guard, and onto a country gravel road. The farm was relatively deserted at 1pm on a Saturday, except for a…

Making the Switch
As you know, we’ve been transitioning our eating for 10 months now. It recently came to my attention, that, duh, there are other chemicals in our environment that I should probably pay attention to – like in my laundry detergent, dishwasher soap, hand soap, other cleaners, toothpaste, hand lotion, shampoo and conditioner, etc, etc. Whew. Time for another overhaul. A friend pointed out that when I use my typical brands, they have all sorts of junk in them! Great, more junk. This is junk like propylene glycol, which is a known carcinogen. (Well, not known to me prior to this point, but apparently known by somebody.) This ingredient is found…

The joys of co-ops
We have recently joined two co-ops and I LOVE them!! They are a great way to get organic food, for significantly less money than the grocery store. I’m part of a meat co-op that has Whole Foods quality meat at awesome prices. $4.59/lb for chicken breasts, 2.99/lb for ground turkey, and 3.99/lb for beef. The meat tastes so good too. We place our orders once a month by emailing the host, and then pick it up at her home in Colleyville, usually on a Friday afternoon. They will hold the meat for you if you can’t come during the pickup window. There are no minimum orders. Email me at selahfalk…

Some help for the breakfast conundrum
Breakfast has been a challenge at our house lately. I was shocked to learn that Lucky Charms and Special K have the same nutritional value. Equally shocking was to read articles about the extrusion process and the horrible effects cereal has on test rats. (Hmm… maybe I should feed cornflakes to the rat that refuses to get caught in our trap and likes to live in the back of my oven. I think he’s the size of my cat. I have a cat… WHY do I have a rat too? Ok, I digress). After that education, I tried REALLY hard to not eat cereal. REALLY HARD. I made baked oatmeal,…

Love at First Taste
I had my first taste of raw cow’s milk on Friday and I have fallen head over heels in love. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. 🙂 It’s super creamy and I felt really nourished after I drank it. I loved it so much I had 3 glasses on Friday night alone. We’ve already gone through an entire gallon. Raw milk is such a debated topic – after my weekend, I am definitely in the pro-raw milk camp! It’s full of probiotics & good healthy fats. Click here to read more on the benefits of raw milk and to answer those safety questions you’re probably asking!

Healthy Poptarts
Healthy Poptarts. I did just use those two words together in a sentence. Davy and I tried them out today and we like them! My neighbors gave their approval too. (I think I might be a fun neighbor… we don’t have a loud dog and we like to share our baking. Don’t you want to come and live next door?) Anyway, the poptarts are simple – only 5 ingredients. I felt a bit like we were making Christmas cookies, with all the dough rolling. The recipe is here. As usual, I have a few modifications/notes. Next time around, I would roll the dough out thinner. Thin is good. I would…

Who loves pumpkin scones?
I do! I’m always excited when fall comes around because the pumpkin scones reappear at Starbucks! I found a great recipe this week, tried it out, and gave it two thumbs up! It’s simple, quick, and YUMMY! Enjoy! BTW, my recipe modifications are in brackets to give you some other ideas. If you have spelt flour, rapadura, and Celtic sea salt, go for it! Otherwise, I offer some suggestions of items you are more likely to have that are still on the healthier end of the specturm.Pumpkin Scones (akin to Starbucks but healthier) – from RiddleLoveMakes 6 large scones (picture the ones at Starbucks)Prep time: 15 minutes. Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe goodness
My friend Bethany introduced me to a wonderful recipe for a ‘perfect for fall’ pumpkin spice latte! I tried it out today and absolutely loved it! So of course, I had to share. It’s quick and easy! Ingredients: 2 cups milk2 tablespoons canned pumpkin2 tablespoons sugar2 tablespoons vanilla extract1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice1 cup of strong brewed coffee In a saucepan combine milk, pumpkin and sugar. Cook on medium heat, stirring, until steaming. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and pumpkin spice. Next, whisk the mixture very well until foamy. Transfer mixture into mug, filling only half the cup, and top the rest with coffee. Top with whipping…

Not as hard as I thought!
I made my own baby food! And it was really easy!! I always thought making your own baby food was this super-intensive process that I could never do… I made green beans and sweet potato puree for my sweet Selah and a little bit goes a long way! One sweet potato yielded 30 tablespoons (and about 15 servings) at the exorbitant cost of … .06 a serving. Green beans were slightly more expensive – about .10 a serving. Woohoo! And sweet Selah LOVED the green beans!! (She hasn’t tried the sweet potatoes yet…) And they were super simple to make! I steamed the green beans and cooked the…
